Charts

What it is

Chart libraries mix colors in sRGB, place lines on half pixels, draw curves that overshoot their data and let axis numbers change width. These charts start from the data and render only what they need.

A chart renders only when something changes and pauses when it is off screen. What moves is drawn on a light overlay above a static base layer.

The parts

Lines

Monotone cubic curves after Fritsch and Carlson: smooth, and never above or below the data they pass through.

Horizon

A long series folded into bands, so a day of data fits in a row and still shows its peaks.

Beeswarm

Every value its own dot, pushed aside just enough not to overlap.

Flows

Where energy goes, as bands whose width is the amount.
